The short answer

Choose a photo, then type the new width in pixels (the height follows to keep the shape), scale it by a percent, or pick a preset such as 1080 × 1080. When the shape differs, the tool crops evenly from the edges or adds borders in a color you choose. You see the new size and print size, then download.

How it is calculated

Keeping the aspect ratio: new height = new width × original height ÷ original width. A 1600 × 1200 photo resized to 1080 wide becomes 1080 × 810.

Inches to pixels: pixels = inches × dpi. At 300 dpi, the standard for photo prints, 2 × 2 in = 600 × 600 px and a 4 × 6 in print = 1200 × 1800 px.

Cropping: when the photo is wider than the target, we take a centered rectangle with the target's shape and trim the rest equally from left and right.

Worked example

The sample photo is 1600 × 1200 px (4:3). Make it a 600 × 600 square:

  1. Crop to fit: a centered 1200 × 1200 square is kept, 200 px trimmed from each side, then scaled to 600 × 600.
  2. Add borders instead: the whole photo fits at 600 × 450, with a 75 px band above and below.
  3. Keep aspect ratio and type 1080 for width: the height becomes 810, nothing is cropped.

600 × 600 px, which prints at 2 × 2 in at 300 dpi.

Special cases and common mistakes

  • Check the exact size on the official page. Passport, visa and ID photo rules set head size and background, not just pixels, and they change. Take the numbers from the agency, then enter them here.
  • Pixels and file size are different limits. If an upload form rejects your photo for its file size in KB or MB, resize here and then use Compress image to hit the size.
  • Enlarging does not add detail. A 300 px image stretched to 1200 px looks soft. Start from the original photo whenever you can.
  • Sideways phone photos are fixed. The rotation stored in the photo is applied before resizing, so the result comes out upright.
  • For square posts without cropping, choose a square preset and "Add borders": the whole picture stays, with bands in the color you pick.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize an image without losing quality?

Shrinking keeps it sharp; enlarging always softens it. Keep the original format (PNG stays lossless) and resize down from the largest version you have.

How do I resize a photo to 2x2 inches?

Pick the "2 × 2 in print" preset: it makes a 600 × 600 px image, which prints at exactly 2 × 2 inches at 300 dpi. Check the official rules for head size and background.

How do I resize an image for Instagram without cropping?

Choose 1080 × 1080 or 1080 × 1350 and set "Add borders". The whole picture fits inside, with bands in the color you pick.

Can I resize several images at once?

Yes. Select them together; every image gets the same size, and "Download all" saves a ZIP.

How do I resize to 3000 x 3000 for cover art?

Use the 3000 × 3000 preset. If your artwork is smaller than that, it will be enlarged and may look soft; start from a bigger file if you have one.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Resizing happens in your browser, and the photo is never sent to a server.
