The short answer

The next major Jewish holiday is Hanukkah, which begins at sundown on Friday, December 4, 2026 (25 Kislev 5787). Passover 2027 begins at sundown on April 21, 2027, and Rosh Hashanah 2027 at sundown on October 1, 2027. Every Jewish holiday starts the evening before its first full day.

How it is calculated

Holiday date = a fixed day of a Hebrew month, read from the Hebrew calendar for that year

Rosh Hashanah 1 Tishrei · Yom Kippur 10 Tishrei · Sukkot 15 Tishrei · Simchat Torah 23 Tishrei (diaspora) · Hanukkah 25 Kislev · Purim 14 Adar (14 Adar II in a leap year) · Passover 15 Nisan · Shavuot 6 Sivan. The Gregorian date moves each year because the Hebrew calendar follows the moon, with a 13th month added seven times in 19 years.

Worked example

The Cohens in New Jersey want to plan around Passover 2027.

  1. Passover starts on 15 Nisan, which in Hebrew year 5787 is Thursday, April 22, 2027
  2. Jewish days begin at sundown, so the holiday starts on the evening of Wednesday, April 21, 2027
  3. In the diaspora Passover lasts eight days, ending at nightfall on Thursday, April 29, 2027

Passover 2027 runs from sundown on April 21, 2027, to nightfall on April 29, 2027. The countdown above shows the time left right now.

Special cases and common mistakes

  • Holidays start the evening before. A Jewish day runs from sundown to sundown, so Rosh Hashanah, Passover and the others begin at sunset on the day before the date printed on most calendars. Sunset time depends on where you live.
  • Dates here follow the diaspora schedule used in the US and Canada. In Israel, Passover lasts seven days instead of eight, Shavuot one day instead of two, and Simchat Torah falls a day earlier, together with Shemini Atzeret.
  • Purim moves to Adar II in leap years. Seven of every 19 Hebrew years have a second Adar. In those years Purim is on 14 Adar II, as in 5787 (Purim on Tuesday, March 23, 2027) and 5790 (Purim on Tuesday, March 19, 2030).
  • Why the Gregorian date shifts. Each holiday keeps the same Hebrew date, but the Hebrew year is lunar-based with leap months, so the holiday moves within a window of about a month on the Gregorian calendar.
  • Hanukkah has eight nights. The first candle is lit on the evening Hanukkah begins, which is the evening before 25 Kislev.

Why do Jewish holidays start at sundown?

In the Jewish calendar a day runs from sundown to sundown, not midnight to midnight. Every holiday therefore begins on the evening before the date shown on a standard calendar and ends at nightfall on its last day.

Why are Jewish holidays on different dates every year?

They fall on the same Hebrew date each year. The Hebrew calendar is based on the moon, with a leap month added seven times in 19 years, so the matching Gregorian date moves by up to about a month.
