Calculated Umm al-Qura calendar, compared with the FCNA calendar · Runs in your browserLast reviewed: October 9, 2026
The short answer
1 Ramadan 1445 AH was Monday, March 11, 2024, in the Umm al-Qura calendar. To convert, choose "Hijri → Gregorian" or "Gregorian → Hijri" and type the date. Umm al-Qura is a calculated Islamic calendar, like the one FCNA publishes; communities that follow local moon sighting may be a day apart.
How it is calculated
There is no fixed formula: a Hijri month has 29 or 30 days, set by the moon.
This converter reads the Umm al-Qura table, which gives the Gregorian start date of every Hijri month.
Gregorian date = Gregorian start of the Hijri month + (Hijri day − 1)
Worked example
Noah in Toronto wants the Gregorian date of 1 Ramadan 1445 AH, and the Hijri date for October 8, 2026.
- In the Umm al-Qura table, Ramadan 1445 AH started on March 11, 2024
- Day 1 adds nothing, so the answer is Monday, March 11, 2024
- Check in reverse: March 11, 2024, is 1 Ramadan 1445 AH
- The other direction: October 8, 2026, is Thursday, 27 Rabi al-Thani 1448 AH
1 Ramadan 1445 AH = March 11, 2024; October 8, 2026 = 27 Rabi al-Thani 1448 AH. If Noah's mosque follows local moon sighting, its date can be a day later.

Special cases and common mistakes
- Three ways to start a month. Umm al-Qura is an astronomical calendar computed in advance. Many mosques in the US and Canada instead start each month when the new crescent is seen locally, and others follow the calculated calendar of the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA). The same day can therefore carry Hijri dates one day apart.
- How FCNA calculates: FCNA follows the European Council for Fatwa and Research in treating sighting as a means rather than a requirement. A new month begins the next day if, after the conjunction somewhere on the globe, the sun-moon angle at local sunset is at least 8° and the moon is at least 5° above the horizon. For 1448 AH, the month starts in the table above all match FCNA's published dates.
- Ramadan and Eid: the dates shown are calendar dates. Check with your local mosque or Islamic center, since the start of fasting and Eid depends on the method it follows.
- Supported range: April 30, 1900 (1 Muharram 1318 AH) to December 31, 2100 (29 Shawwal 1524 AH). Dates outside it show a message instead of an unreliable result.
- Day 30: if a Hijri month has only 29 days, entering day 30 shows an error. The "Days" column in the table gives each month's length.
- Hijri year length: 1448 AH has 355 days, about 11 fewer than a Gregorian year, so Hijri dates move earlier by roughly 11 days each year.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a Hijri date to Gregorian?
Choose "Hijri → Gregorian" and type the Hijri date. For example, 1 Ramadan 1445 AH is March 11, 2024.
How do I convert a Gregorian date to Hijri?
Choose "Gregorian → Hijri" and type the date. October 8, 2026, is 27 Rabi al-Thani 1448 AH.
What is today's Hijri date?
It is shown under the date fields, in both calendars, based on your device's date and the Umm al-Qura calendar. Your local mosque may count a day differently.
Why is my mosque one day off from this converter?
This converter uses the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar. Mosques that wait for a local moon sighting can start the month a day later, and FCNA uses its own calculation, so dates can differ by a day.
Does this converter match the FCNA calendar?
For 1448 AH, every month start in our table matches the dates published by the Fiqh Council of North America. In other years the two calculations can differ by a day.
When does each month of 1448 AH start?
See the table above. The year began on June 16, 2026, and has 355 days in the Umm al-Qura calendar.
