The short answer

Ramadan 2027 (1448 AH) is expected to begin on Monday, February 8, 2027, the date given by the Fiqh Council of North America's calculation. Mosques in the US and Canada that wait for a local moon sighting may start a day later. Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday, March 9, 2027.

How it is calculated

Expected date: the first day the calculated Hijri calendar shows 1 Ramadan (1 Shawwal for Eid al-Fitr, 10 Dhu al-Hijjah for Eid al-Adha).

Time left = midnight at the start of that date in your time zone − the time now on your device

Worked example

Sarah in Houston wants to plan time off around Ramadan and Eid.

  1. Expected first day of Ramadan 1448: Monday, February 8, 2027, the same in the FCNA and Umm al-Qura calendars
  2. The first taraweeh prayer is the night before, on the evening of Sunday, February 7, 2027, and the first fast starts at dawn on February 8, 2027
  3. Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal) is expected on Tuesday, March 9, 2027, and Eid al-Adha on Sunday, May 16, 2027
  4. The countdown on this page runs to midnight Houston time at the start of the expected date, so it matches her own clock

Sarah plans for Ramadan from February 8, 2027, and keeps February 9, 2027 free in case her mosque follows a local sighting.

Quick reference table

Expected dates by astronomical calculation (Umm al-Qura calendar); for 1448 and 1449 AH they match the dates published by the Fiqh Council of North America. Mosques that follow local sighting may differ by one day.

Special cases and common mistakes

  • Sighting or calculation. Some North American mosques start Ramadan when the new crescent is seen locally on the evening of the 29th of Shaban. Others follow a calculated calendar such as the one published by the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA). The two can differ by a day, so the start may vary between mosques in the same city.
  • How FCNA calculates: after the conjunction somewhere on the globe, a new month begins the next day if, at local sunset, the angle between the sun and moon is at least 8° and the moon is at least 5° above the horizon. FCNA publishes its dates in advance.
  • The countdown uses your time zone. It ends at midnight at the start of the expected date where you are, whether that is Eastern, Central, Mountain or Pacific time. The first night of Ramadan (taraweeh) begins at sunset the evening before, and the first fast starts at dawn.
  • Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier every year. The Hijri year is roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian one, so Ramadan 1451 and 1452 both start in 2030.
  • Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days. The last table column shows what the calculated calendar predicts for each year.

What time zone does the countdown use?

Yours. The counter reads your device's clock and counts to midnight at the start of the expected date in your local time zone.
