The short answer
Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth once it has stayed at or above the nisab for a full lunar year. The nisab is the value of 85 g of pure gold or 595 g of pure silver. At US prices on October 8, 2026, that was about $11,251 on gold and $1,123 on silver.
How it is calculated
Price per gram = price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768
Gold value = weight in grams × (karat ÷ 24) × price per gram of 24k gold
Net wealth = cash + gold + silver + business inventory + money owed to you + retirement amount (optional) − debts due now (if you deduct them)
Zakat = net wealth × 2.5%, only if net wealth ≥ nisab and a lunar year has passed.
Worked example
Hannah in Chicago has $12,000 across her checking and savings accounts and 30 g of 22k gold bangles she keeps as savings. A lunar year has passed. On her zakat date, October 8, 2026, gold was $4,117 per troy ounce. She leaves the retirement field at 0.
- Gold per gram: $4,117 ÷ 31.1034768 = $132.36
- Pure gold: 30 × 22 ÷ 24 = 27.5 g, worth $3,640.03
- Total: $12,000 + $3,640.03 = $15,640.03
- Gold nisab: 85 g × $132.36 = $11,250.99, and she is above it
- Zakat: $15,640.03 × 2.5% = $391
Hannah's zakat: $391. Someone in Toronto would enter the same kind of figures in Canadian dollars and get the result in CAD.
Quick reference table
| Amount (USD) | Gold nisab | Silver nisab |
|---|---|---|

| 10,000 | none | 250 |
| 25,000 | 625 | 625 |
| 50,000 | 1,250 | 1,250 |
| 100,000 | 2,500 | 2,500 |
Special cases and common mistakes
- The nisab you pick can decide whether you pay at all. At October 8, 2026 prices, $5,000 in savings is below the gold nisab ($11,250.99) but above the silver nisab ($1,123.10), so it owes $125 on the silver standard and nothing on the gold one. Zakat Foundation of America uses the gold nisab; NZF Canada recommends the silver nisab. This calculator shows both and does not choose for you.
- Ounce or gram: US and Canadian gold and silver prices are usually quoted per troy ounce (about 31.1 g). Choose "troy ounce" and type the spot price, or switch to "gram" if your dealer quotes per gram. Jewelry weight is always entered in grams.
- 401(k) and IRA, view 1 (Fiqh Council of North America): zakat on these accounts is due every year. If you hold the account as a long-term investment, pay only on the zakatable part of the fund (cash, receivables and inventory held by the companies in it), not the market value. If you plan to cash it out soon, pay on the market value minus the taxes and penalties a withdrawal would cost. FCNA says not to mix the two methods.
- View 2 (AMJA): a 2008 fatwa from the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America gives the formula: withdrawable amount minus the penalty minus the tax equals the zakatable amount.
- View 3 (Zakat Foundation of America): no zakat is owed on 401(k), IRA or defined-contribution accounts you cannot reach without a penalty or other restriction; zakat is owed if you have full, free access. Follow the view of a scholar you trust, work out the figure, and enter it in the retirement field.
- Canada (RRSP, TFSA): the fatwas above discuss US accounts and do not name Canadian plans. If you hold an RRSP, a TFSA or a workplace pension, ask a scholar which method applies to your account.
- Gold jewelry you wear: scholars differ. Zakat Foundation of America holds that jewelry a woman wears for adornment is not zakatable, and notes that the Hanafi school and others count gold and silver as zakatable in any form. Include worn jewelry in the gold field only if you follow the second view.
- Debts: Zakat Foundation of America deducts debt payments that fall due by your zakat date, but not long-term debts such as a mortgage or student loan unless you are paying them off now. NZF Canada also says debts that take you below the nisab mean no zakat that year. Enter only what you deduct, or leave the field at 0.
Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab for zakat in 2026?
The nisab is the value of 85 g of pure gold or 595 g of pure silver. At US spot prices on October 8, 2026, that was about $11,251 on the gold standard and $1,123 on the silver standard. Use the prices on your own zakat date.
Do I pay zakat on my 401(k) or IRA?
Scholars in North America differ. FCNA says yes, every year, on either the zakatable assets inside the fund or the value minus taxes and penalties. AMJA uses the withdrawable amount minus penalty and tax. Zakat Foundation of America says no while access is restricted.
Is zakat due on an RRSP or TFSA in Canada?
The North American fatwas cited on this page discuss US accounts such as the 401(k) and IRA and do not name Canadian plans. Ask a scholar you trust which method fits your RRSP or TFSA, then enter the amount in the retirement field.
How do I calculate zakat on 22k or 18k gold?
Multiply the weight in grams by the karat and divide by 24 to get pure gold, then multiply by the 24k price per gram and take 2.5%. For example, 100 g of 18k gold is 75 g of pure gold.
How do I convert the gold price per ounce to per gram?
Divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1034768. At $4,117 an ounce, 1 g of pure gold is about $132.36. The calculator does this for you when you choose "troy ounce".
Can I deduct my mortgage or student loan?
Zakat Foundation of America deducts only payments due by your zakat date, not the full balance of a mortgage or student loan. Other scholars hold different views, so enter the amount you deduct, or 0.
