Convert to
Background for transparent areas

The short answer

Drop one PNG or a batch, leave the format on JPG, and each file converts at once with its size before and after and a Download button. JPG has no transparency, so see-through areas are filled with white or a color you choose. It also converts JPG to PNG and to or from WebP, with a ZIP for many files.

How it is calculated

Each image is drawn pixel for pixel onto a canvas of the same size, then saved in the new format by your browser’s own encoder. Dimensions never change.

For JPG, the canvas is painted with your background color first. JPG cannot store transparency, and without a fill some apps show those areas as black. We also check the image and tell you when it really had transparent pixels.

JPG and WebP default to 92% quality; PNG is lossless, so there is no quality setting.

Worked example

Press "Try a transparent sample" and the tool draws a 600 × 400 px logo on a transparent background:

  1. As a PNG it is 13 KB. Converted to JPG on white: 8.4 KB.
  2. A note under the file says it had transparency and was filled. Switch to Black or pick a color and it converts again instantly.
  3. The file is saved as logo-transparent.jpg.

13 KB PNG → 8.4 KB JPG, same dimensions.

Special cases and common mistakes

  • JPG to PNG makes photos about four times bigger (see the table) with no gain in quality. Use PNG for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges.
  • Converting to PNG does not remove a background. A JPG never had transparency, so the background stays.
  • iPhone HEIC photos often will not open in Chrome or Edge on Windows. If you see the HEIC message, set Settings › Camera › Formats to "Most Compatible" on the iPhone.
  • WebP rejected by a form? Images saved from websites are often WebP. Convert them to JPG here before uploading.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to JPG without losing quality?

Raise the quality slider to 100%. At the default 92% the difference is very hard to see, and the file is much smaller.

Why did my transparent background turn white?

JPG cannot store transparency, so those pixels need a color. Pick another background color, or convert to PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.

Can I convert many PNG files to JPG at once?

Yes. Select or drop them all, then press "Download all" to get a ZIP. There is no file limit beyond your device’s memory.

How do I convert JPG to PNG?

Choose the image and pick PNG under "Convert to". Dimensions stay the same and PNG is lossless.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion runs in your browser. Turn off Wi-Fi after the page loads and it keeps working.
