The short answer

Easter 2027 is on Sunday, March 28, 2027. Good Friday is March 26 and Ash Wednesday is February 10. Orthodox Easter 2027 falls five weeks later, on Sunday, May 2, 2027. Enter any year from 1583 to 4099 above to see its dates.

How it is calculated

Easter is the first Sunday after the church’s calculated full moon on or after March 21. Western churches compute it on the Gregorian calendar (the anonymous Gregorian algorithm, also called Meeus/Jones/Butcher). Orthodox churches compute it on the Julian calendar, and we convert that date to the Gregorian calendar.

Ash Wednesday = Easter − 46 days · Palm Sunday = Easter − 7 · Good Friday = Easter − 2 · Ascension = Easter + 39 · Pentecost = Easter + 49

Worked example

Nadia’s family celebrates both Easters and wants to know how far apart they are in 2028.

  1. Western Easter 2028: Sunday, April 16, 2028
  2. Orthodox Easter 2028 (Julian computus, converted): Sunday, April 16, 2028
  3. Difference: 0 days
  4. Lent for Western churches starts on Ash Wednesday, Wednesday, March 1, 2028

In 2028 both churches celebrate Easter on the same Sunday, April 16.

Special cases and common mistakes

  • Western Easter always falls between March 22 and April 25. Orthodox Easter, shown on the Gregorian calendar, falls between April 4 and May 8.
  • Sometimes both churches share the date. In the next 10 years that happens in 2028, 2031 and 2034. Otherwise Orthodox Easter is one, four or five weeks later.
  • Good Friday is a general holiday in Canada for federally regulated employees. In the US it is not a federal holiday, though some states, schools and markets close.
  • Pentecost is the 50th day when you count Easter Sunday as day one, which is why the formula adds 49 days.
  • Years before 1583 are not supported. The Gregorian calendar began in October 1582, so earlier Western dates would need the Julian calendar instead.

Frequently asked questions

When is Easter 2027?

Sunday, March 28, 2027. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, March 21, and Good Friday is March 26.

When is Easter 2028?

Sunday, April 16, 2028. Orthodox Easter falls on the same day.

When is Orthodox Easter 2027?

Sunday, May 2, 2027, 35 days after Western Easter. Orthodox churches still calculate Easter on the Julian calendar.

When is Ash Wednesday 2027?

Wednesday, February 10, 2027, 46 days before Easter Sunday. The 46 days are the 40 days of Lent plus the six Sundays.

Why does Easter change every year?

Easter is tied to the first full moon on or after March 21, as set by the church’s calculation tables, and must fall on a Sunday. Both the moon and the weekday shift from year to year, so the date moves within a five-week window.

Why are Western and Orthodox Easter on different dates?

Both use the same basic rule, but Orthodox churches apply it on the Julian calendar, which is currently 13 days behind, and with older moon tables. That usually pushes Orthodox Easter one or more weeks later.
